Will people be able to tell I’m wearing a wig?
Or our male clients ask: Will people be able to tell I am wearing a toupee? Modern hair systems and wigs can look extremely natural when properly fitted, cut, and styled. The most important factor is not just the hair itself, but the customization process—including matching color, density, and creating a realistic front hairline. At Riviera, our goal is for your hair to be completely undetectable.
What is the difference between a wig, topper, and hair system?
A wig covers the entire scalp and is ideal for full hair loss. A topper is designed to add volume or coverage to specific areas for those with partial thinning. Hair systems (often used by men) are customized pieces that integrate with your existing hair. During your consultation at our Long Island studio, we help determine which solution is best for you.
How long do hair systems and wigs last?
The lifespan of a hair system or wig depends on the type of hair, base material, and how well it is maintained. On average, they can last anywhere from a few months for the most delicate and realistic of bonded toupees to several years. Proper care, regular maintenance, and professional servicing at our Syosset location can significantly extend longevity. As a general rule, if is something you take it off at night like a full wig or a clip-in topper it significantly extends the life span compared to bonded options that you live in and wear 24/7.
Can I shower, swim, and exercise with a hair system?
Yes. Many modern hair systems are designed to be worn during daily activities, including showering, swimming, and working out. The level of durability depends on the type of system and attachment method. We will guide you on the best options based on your lifestyle. You can definitely wear your full wig to the gym or to the beach, but keep in mind if you go in the water the wig might not look as natural wet as it does dry – and make sure to rinse, wash and condition it thoroughly so you’re not leaving salt or chlorine in the wig.
How do I wash my wig?
Proper care is important and depends on the type of hair (synthetic vs. human hair), but it is not complicated. We provide every customer with detailed take home care instructions, and you can also see this article for more on how to care for and style your wig.
Will a wig, a hair system or a topper damage my own hair?
A wig is perfectly safe to wear over your own hair and is the gentlest way to change your style – that’s why more and more Hollywood stars use wigs rather than style and restyle their own hair all the time. Bonded systems require skillful installation and maintenance to protect your own hair and scalp. We will always give you a sanguine assessment. Clip-in toppers are also safe for your own hair as long as you make sure each clip has enough hairs to clip into, and if you hold the hair and/or the topper as you brush and style the hair. We generally do not recommend sleeping with a clip-in topper, but doing it occasionally is ok if it feels ok on your head.
Are human hair wigs better than synthetic wigs?
Generally human hair wigs are going to offer the most realism in terms of feel and looks, but especially blends that combine a mix of synthetic with human hair can be very compelling. They offer something different – they are often lighter in density and hold the style for longer with less styling needed.
You can get human hair wigs of questionable quality, and you can get blends that are exceptional. What makes a wig right or wrong for you is not only about the type of hair. Construction, craftmanship, fit, color and style – and of course price. Many aspects need to line up.
Will a wig be secure on my head?
Once we fit and size your wig correctly so that it anchors at the nape just below the occipital bone, the cap contours perfectly to your scalp, and the front lace or perimeter lies totally flat, the wig will be both comfortable and secure.
95% of our clients don’t need anything else to keep their wig in place, but if you have any particular needs – perhaps you work around children, modern dance, or you like to visit Florida in the hurricane season? In that case we can always modify the cap to fit more securely.
It can be a matter of adding clips, combs or strategically placed silicone panels – but first step is to make sure the fit is perfect because that does most of the heavy lifting.
Can I sleep in my hair system?
Yes, most bonded hair systems are designed to be worn continuously, including while sleeping. However, we recommend using a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and prolong the life of the hair. Proper nighttime care can make a big difference in how long your system lasts and how it looks day to day.
What is the difference between stock and custom wigs?
Stock wigs are pre-made and available immediately, making them a great option if you need something quickly. Custom wigs are made specifically for you, based on your measurements, color, density, and style preferences. While custom wigs take longer to produce, they offer the highest level of personalization and fit.
Is hair replacement better than a hair transplant?
Hair replacement and hair transplants are very different solutions. Hair replacement offers immediate, non-surgical results with full control over style and density. Hair transplants are permanent but depend on donor hair availability and may require multiple procedures. Many clients choose non-surgical hair replacement for its flexibility and predictability.
Do you take insurance?
Alternative hair solutions purchased for a medical condition can often be partially reimbursable by insurance with a prescription from your doctor. We will provide you with proof of purchase that has your detailed information and the right terminology, which you can then submit to your insurance company. If you wonder “will insurance pay for a wig”, we suggest inquiring with your insurance company and we recommend asking if they cover a “prescription cranial prosthesis”. With a medical purchase and a prescription, you are eligible to have the sales tax reimbursed by the State. This is regardless of your insurance policy, and we provide the form and an envelope for you to use.
Do you offer credit/buy now pay later options?
Yes, with larger purchases we offer credit options through Pay with Cherry which is a great 0% APR option with no hard credit check. A high-end, custom wig is something you will use and enjoy for a long time, and so for many it makes perfect sense to buy a luxury wig on credit.
