Introduction: Why Wig Care Matters

A high-quality wig is an investment – not just financially, but emotionally. Whether you wear a wig due to hair loss, thinning hair, chemotherapy, religious belief, to affirm your gender identity, or personal style, proper care is essential to maintaining a natural appearance, softness, and longevity.

Modern wigs – whether human hair, synthetic, or heat-friendly blends – can be incredibly realistic. But without the right care routine, they can quickly lose their shape, shine, and manageability. This guide will walk you through exactly how to care for and style your wig based on its type, so you can look and feel your best every day.

Understanding Different Wig Types

Before diving into care routines, it’s important to understand that not all wigs should be treated the same:

  1. Human Hair Wigs
  • Most natural look and movement
  • Can be heat styled
  • Require hydration and conditioning

Human hair wigs behave much like your own hair, including reacting to humidity and the environment in general – but without natural scalp oils, they need added moisture to stay healthy.

  1. Synthetic Wigs
  • Often pre-styled and less maintenance
  • Cannot tolerate heat or chemical treatments
  • Hold their shape well

Synthetic fibers are delicate and can be permanently damaged by heat or improper washing. They can also be prone to friction-frizz especially at the nape.

  1. Heat-Friendly Blends
  • Combine human hair and synthetic fibers
  • Allow heat styling at low temperatures
  • Require careful temperature control

These blends offer versatility but come with limitations – especially when it comes to heat and chemical processing.

Regardless of the type of hair, lace front wigs offer a very high degree of realism and can mimic a soft and natural-looking front hairline. This level of realism comes at a price: the lace front is the most delicate part of the wig. Avoid touching the lace by holding the wig by the ear tabs and put it slightly in front of your hair line and slide it backwards and never forwards when putting it on.

How to Wash and Condition Your Wig

General Washing Principles

Regardless of wig type, always:

  • Detangle gently from ends to roots before washing
  • Use cool or lukewarm water
  • Avoid rubbing, twisting, or wringing

Washing Frequency

Most wigs should be washed:

  • Every 2–3 weeks with daily wear
  • Less frequently if worn occasionally

Overwashing can shorten the lifespan of the hair or fibers. The less styling products you use and the lighter products you use, the longer you can go between washes and the longer your wig will last.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Human Hair Wigs

  • Use good sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo
  • Apply conditioner mid-length to ends only
  • Avoid conditioners on the base to protect knots

Synthetic Wigs

  • Use products specifically designed for synthetic fibers
  • Avoid traditional conditioners, which can cause buildup

Heat-Friendly Blends

  • Use lightweight, wig-safe products
  • Avoid heavy oils and harsh chemicals

If you use adhesives or makeup on lace fronts, always remove residue gently with proper removers – never peel or scrub aggressively, as this can damage the lace. Micella water can be a gentle way to clean makeup off your lace front.

Drying and Styling Techniques by Wig Type

Wig care and wig styling is not hard – but it helps if you know what you are doing.

Air Drying vs. Heat Styling

Synthetic Wigs

  • Always air dry on a wig stand
  • Never use blow dryers or heat tools

Human Hair Wigs

  • Can be air dried, but we recommend blow drying with a good, lightweight heat protection spray when the hair is still a little damp
  • If the hair needs moisture, use a little lightweight leave-in conditioner on the mids and ends of the hair when it is still damp – distribute it throughout the hair with a brush or comb
  • Gentle tension on the hair with a round bristled brush in small sections at a time while blowing drying the hair from slightly damp to dry is the best way to seal the cuticle, keep the hair’s moisture inside, and get the most luxurious looking finish. You can also add a curl using a curling or flatiron but remember to use heat protectant and work in small sections at a time.
  • Keep temperatures below 350°F (preferably lower for fine or treated hair)

Heat-Friendly Blends

  • Air drying is recommended
  • Heat tools can be used at controlled temperatures (ideally around 270–280°F) to style

Styling Tips

  • Use wide-tooth combs or wig-specific brushes
  • Apply heat protectant before styling
  • Avoid heavy oils and alcohol-based products

For synthetic wigs, styling should be minimal – finger styling or light reshaping works best. Synthetic wigs and blends can be styled using a small amount of steam from an inexpensive portable clothes steamer. This is especially good at managing friction-frizz at the back of the wig. Never trim the frizz with scissors – you will just end up going shorter and shorter. Just keep the steamer moving not too close to the fiber and gently comb the frizz out with a brush.

Steam can also be used on a synthetic wig to set it in a curly style using rollers.

Dry or split ends on human hair wigs unfortunately happen just like it does to bio hair through brushing, friction and daily wear. Split ends cannot be permanently repaired (without trimming which will make the hair shorter), but careful flat ironing (with heat protectant – always heat protectant!) can reduce the appearance of split ends. You can also try a few drops of very lightweight hair oil (sometime called bond maintenance or bond smoother) – just warm up a few drops of oil between your palms and run your hands over the ends of the hair. Be mindful that some oils can give a color cast on blond wigs.

But shouldn’t I trim my split ends to make sure they don’t travel up the hair and become worse? No, this is a common myth. Hair ends split because they dry out. The hair has three parts: The outer cuticle, the matrix and the hollow space in the center, the medula. When the hair end is cut, the center of hair, the medula is open allowing moisture to escape from the hair. Over time, this causes the ends to dry and split, but unless you actively pull the hair ends in different directions, the split will not travel up the hair so trims will only make the hair shorter (and on a wig of course it will never grow back out). Some of our favourite products come from companies like Olaplex (especially their hair oil no. 7), Redken (for example their acidic bonding concentrate), and Purology (especially their color fanatic leave-in conditioner).

Wig styling guide - it should not be too complicated

Cosmetic companies love to tell us we need a 12-step routine, but the best routines are simple, manageable, and effective. It is not about adding more stuff – it is about using and doing the right things.

Daily Wear, Fit, and Maintenance

A well-fitted wig should feel:

  • Secure but comfortable
  • Snug without pressure – and contour completely to the shape of your head
  • Stable during movement

Most modern wigs are designed to be worn glueless, but additional support (like tape or clips) can be used if or when needed.

Tips for Natural Appearance

  • If you have a lot of hair underneath, a wig cap or head band can help keep both your hair and wig in place. Long, full hair takes a bit of practice to manage underneath a wig, but a thin wig cap and thin bobby pins with a bit of curve that follows the shape of your head can help.
  • You can color adjust the part with concealer or a wig part pencil if needed
  • Handle lace fronts carefully – always hold at the ear tabs

Proper fit is essential not just for comfort, but for achieving a truly natural look. If your wig does not fit you perfectly, come see us for a fit check. Often a small adjustment can make a big difference both in feel and appearance. It is also not unusual for the fit to change ever so slightly – the fabric can stretch, elastics go tired, and your own hair can change underneath.

Storage and Longevity Tips

How you store your wig directly impacts its lifespan.

Best Practices

  • Always dry or let the wig dry completely before storing
  • Use a wig stand or mannequin head that does not stretch the cap – especially when the cap is drying and still wet
  • Keep in a cool, dry, dark environment

Sunlight, heat, and humidity can degrade both human hair and synthetic fibers over time.

Extend Lifespan

  • If possible, rotate between two wigs if worn daily
  • Avoid excessive product buildup
  • Address tangling or frizz early
  • Use good quality, lightweight products – sometimes drug store brands can work ok, but with products unfortunately we mostly get what we pay for.

Sleeping in a wig will significantly reduce its lifespan, especially delicate lace-units where the friction directly touches the knots.

Rotating between wigs significantly reduces wear and helps maintain their appearance longer.

When to Seek Professional Wig Care

Even with perfect at-home care, professional maintenance is essential.

At Riviera Hair Replacement, we recommend:

  • Professional cleaning and conditioning every 2–3 months for daily wear
  • Regular fit checks and adjustments
  • Repairs and restyling as needed

Professional care can:

  • Restore softness and shine
  • Correct frizz or tangling early
  • Extend the lifespan of your wig

Over time, all wigs experience natural wear – such as slight color changes, dryness, or shedding. Addressing these early makes a significant difference.
